The Respite Connection

The Respite Connection program is child-centered, with the needs and strengths of the child/youth and family dictating the types and mix of services provided. It is community-based, with the locus of services, as well as management and decision-making responsibility resting at the community level and always implemented in partnership with the family. All services are sensitive and responsive to cultural differences and special needs.

Respite Care Training

Twenty (20) hours of a mandatory ten- module training in working with children who have special needs, certified by Mississippi Department of Mental Health. We identify, recruit and retain individuals of diverse backgrounds, including those who may have disabilities or who may have family members with disabilities to participate in our Respite Care training and become Respite Mentors in the TRC program.

TRC provides trainings for certification individually, group settings and self-study online (must seek prior approval from Respite Coordinator). The online version does require an exam.  Respite Mentors are required to participate in additional trainings and updates to TRC program as needed. After completing the certification process, new mentors are added to the TRC Register.

Restart Summer Arts Program

Camp Restart is a summer arts and sports camp designed for children/youth ages 5- 13 years old.  Professional artists, respite mentors, youth assistants and volunteers provide a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for children to enjoy, express their creativity, enhance social skills, promote health and fitness and gain self-confidence.

RestART introduces children to a variety of materials, to evoke curiosity, and hone their natural creativity, and their own skills while fostering their appreciation for the arts and sports. This includes art lessons, music, games, crafts, mechanics of sports, and special activities/projects.

Children can experience and have access to benefits like:

  • Working together on a variety of fun projects

  • The joys of making art

  • Enjoyment and renewed love of sports with old and new friends

The camp space is always located within the community. Some activities are subject to change based on availability of supplemental materials and venues.  An attendance form, permission to photo and surveys will be collected for the purpose of promoting and demonstrating the validity of the program.
